How Process Your Dog Bite Injury Claim

Several years ago, we spoke with a woman who had questions about whether she could file a dog bite injury claim.

The incident happened when she was in her early 20s, she said, working as a delivery driver for a private postal carrier. One day, while she was on the job, she was about to deliver a package to a home that was on her route. As she stepped out of her truck, she was attacked by a dog that was being walked off-leash.

Her injuries were so extensive that she required knee surgery. She was out of work for several months, she said, and to this day, she continues to have problems with that leg.

Although her case appeared to be solid, she was unable to file. Why? Because the injury happened 10 years ago.

If you or someone you care for has sustained a dog bite injury, you’ll want to speak with a personal injury attorney as quickly as possible.

What Naples FL lawyers will want to know

When you contact an attorney, they’ll want to know when the injury happened, where, and why it happened. This will help establish whether you have a case.

To use the above example, if you were bitten by a dog who was being walked off leash, then yes, you may be eligible to receive compensation for your injuries. On the other hand, if you were trying to steal a package off someone’s porch and you were attacked by a dog that was on the fenced-in property, this would be a different situation.

You’ll need to show you suffered damages

In order to be successful with a dog bite injury claim, you’ll need to show you suffered damages. Examples of this would include medical bills, lost income, and the nature and extent of your injury.

Someone who was nipped on the finger by a puppy and was able to care for their injury using a small bandage, would have a hard time proving they suffered damages. On the other hand, someone who was injured to the extent that they needed surgery, had to take time off work, and sustained significant scarring, would have a much easier time proving damages in court.
